Katie,
My nephew attended PTC with me in '99, going on the
Mountain Man trek. His MM trek (4 guys 16-18 plus two
rangers) covered approximately 32 miles, and to my
surprise, that included going over Baldy. He came back
rather rank and very tired, but grinning from ear to
ear as well. He came off the trail on his 19th
birthday, and I'm still the favorite uncle 3 years
later.
Where your son's MM trek will visit and how much
distance they will cover is going to depend in part on
the physical condition of the lads he's assigned to,
the motivation of the lads, and of course for this
year, what areas are and are not open due to the
recent fires.
As you're from Denver area, altitude adjustment won't
be a big thing for your son. If he's been prepped to
do 10 mile weekends with his troop, he should have a
great time on a MM trek. It will be different since
he's not with his regular buds, but then again,
getting to know the rangers and the other guys
assigned to my nephew's MM trek was a large part of
the fun for my nephew.
Hope that helps
Kevin Pate
