You are welcome to use them, as long as you put them up in the bear bag. :)

I know, it does not make sense, but this is how it is. I had an advisor come
in my office last summer and we talked about this for a while. He wasn't
happy about it, but that is the way it is at Philmont. Now there is the
chance that Philmont has changed their decision on this since last summer,
but I doubt it.

This is the prefered method for the Sierras, Alaska, and other areas. But
for Philmont they do bear bags. Bear canisters may weigh more (not sure)
and I doubt there will be enough room in them for all the bulky food and
smellables that go up at night. Philfood is pretty bulky and Philmont has
some higher standards on what smellables goes up in the bearbag at night.

There are a number of reasons that I have been told as to why Philmont
doesn't want these used. About the only one I ever agreed with is having
everyone doing the same thing for consistantcy's sake. A weak argument I
know, but its the rules and I was just a yes man.

This may change one day as bear cables get more and more crowded each
summer. Although I can't see Philmont ever buying enough canisters to issue
them out to people as this would increase operational costs for sure.

Anybody know what Philmont policy is towards
wildlife proof food containers, aka "bear cans"?
(www.backpackerscache.com if you've never heard of them)
