On a recent trip to TX everyone except those wering sandals had to take their
shoes off for Xraying before hitting the metal detector. On a recent trip
to Canada only some people were asked to take off their shoes and if shoes set
off the metal detector they were hand inspected. I was told by a lawyer who
works for airlines that the reasons and protocols for who takes off shoes,
who gets hand inspected and who gets metal detected is a secret known only to
TSA. The same seems to be true for swabbing of and hand inspecting of carry
ons and checked luggage. I saw a lot of apparent randomness and some of our
Scouts in class As were singled out while others weren't. At one gate I took
off my shoes, while later at another gate my son had to take off his shoes.
???? I guess the whole idea is to not be simple to figure out.
