We returned home yesterday from Philmont. Our sister crews did Trek 5. Great
weather for the entire trip. Afternoon thundershowers on 2 of the days,
Philmont area has had 8+ inches of rain/snow to-date this year. Last year ~ 1.5
inches. Be sure to take enough 30% Deet repellant. The mosquitos are thick
in many places. One of our crew had a head net. He was the only one able to
get water for the crews at Wild Horse. Several Scouts had bites that became
infected. They had not scratched the bites. Fortunately one of our advisors
is an ER M.D. and brought an antibiotic(zithromax). Bites healed quickly with
3-4 day treatment. Probably not a good idea for most crews unless you have a
physician along. Just be prepared with repellant and long sleeves/pants.

Both PJ and Ute Gulch were out of mosquito repellant when we re-supplied.

It was a great Trek and all members of the crews want to come back again!
