As Philmont contingent leader for our council for nine years, I've tried and seen much in the way of theme and variation regarding crew training prior to, and while at Philmont (no, the training doesn't end when you walk through the front gate - it starts full time) The closer your members are to working as an efficiently functioning crew before Philmont, the better your TOTAL experience will be once your there.

However! weather or not that happens on day one, because of many precamp hikes and overnights, or not until day five because of only a few get-togethers, generally it does happen. Sooner or later mostly everyone gets the "crew" idea. For some it's on day one; for most it around day five; for a few it never does, and maybe, if they ever return, they'll get it then. But whatever, as has been said, let Philmont happen, because in the end it will anyway, no matter how smart you think your are, no matter how many bells and whistles you carry, no matter how many inside tricks you think you know. Philmont is all about people. . . about the experience of a group of gals and guys starting a one point and the ten days it takes them to get to another.

I have learned one very important thing reading this list.

        Let Philmont Happen.

I just returned from Bissett and am leaving in ten days for Philmont and I TOTALLY agree with your sentiments. Stress the basics, and make sure the paperwork is all correct.
