It's still there. Many things determine the download of a web site from a
server, and a server is really nothing more than a specialized computer. So
all the things that cause problems with your home computer, can potentially
cause similar problems when attempting to download the splash, or opening,
page of web site (actually a file as an .htm or asp) such as:
Speed - all servers are not created the same, the more people that access a
page at any one time, the slower the download.
Software - older server software version handle requests in ways different
than new versions and can slow things down.
Upgrades - from time to time server software is upgraded, and many time this
means a server is taken offline during the process.
Copy conversions - sometimes all the data from a server or several servers
is copied to another much larger server, and the process can take a day or
so to iron everything out.
Crashes - yes they crash, and the backup data has to be retrieved and
uploaded, which can take several days.
Humans - sometimes humans press the wrong combinations of buttons, and there
goes the neighborhood.
