I too am looking for info about Trek 11 and also #6. What are some good
side hikes to double dip program????
Comments...
Trek 6:
Day 2 is Ranger Training at Vaca, Day 3 is trail camp at Devils Wash Basin.
You can do Shotgun at Harlan the afternoon of Day 2 or the morning of Day 3.
Burro racing, an evening program at Harlan, is another possibility.
Day 4 is Aspen Springs, another trail camp, and TREKS lists as program rock
climbing and environmental awareness at Cito plus the Lodge Tour at Hunting
Lodge. You could also make a loop and pickup Hidden Valley / Window Rock.
Day 8 is Porcupine, another trail camp, and TREKS lists as program
homesteading at Crooked Creek, a short hike away.
Day 9 and 10 is Beaubien - if you have time, you could go the long way
through Fish Camp to pick up program there. This will add a fair number of
miles to an otherwise short day. Your Conservation project is likely to be
at Beaubien, taking up some of your time there. The sidehike of Trail Peak
is listed as program in TREKS.
Day 11 is North Fork Urraca. You can get there either by going through
Black Mountain Camp (the route in TREKS, program is blacksmithing, black
powder, and a cabin tour, all things you have already seen) and then down
the North Fork of Urraca Creek with it's 50 plus stream crossings, or a
longer (and more up and down) route through Crater Lake (Continental Tie and
Lumber Company) and Miners Park (rock climbing again, but you'd likely be
there too late to get a shot at it).
Trek 11:
Day 2 is Ranger Training at Rayado River, and you will go through Zastrow
with the new land navigation program to get there.
Day 3 is a trail camp at Lookout Meadow, with program listed as the Mexican
homestead and Cantina at Abreau. Probably would do the cantina the night of
Day 2 rather than the morning of Day 3.
Day 7 in TREKS is an error - that day you will pass through Crooked Creek,
with it's homesteading program on your way to Wild Horse.
Day 8 you will pass through Clear Creek with its blackpowder rifle and Rocky
Mountain Fur Company program (not Day 7 as listed).
Day 11 you could go the long way to Clark Fork through Hidden Valley /
Window Rock. However, you might want to (or have to) do rock climbing at
Cito the morning of Day 11 rather than Day 10, and then probably don't have
time for that. Also need to work a sidehike to Ute Gulch into the mix to
pick up your last couple of days of food.
With a very early start Day 12, you could be at Shaefers Peak for sunrise,
but that would definitely require breaking camp and beginning to move in the
dark, though most of your hike would be in the pre-dawn light. The plus of
that is you have a very long last day with no water sources, and you'd get
some of it out of the way before sunrise.
You probably don't want to do ALL of the above suggestions - it'd make your
Typical trek into a Rugged or even Strenuous one. But they are
possibilities you can consider.
At the Urraca campfire three weeks from now...
