We just returned from Philmont on Sunday. Our crew and our sister crew both
shot at hats and t-shirts using black powder rifles at Philmont.

Jason wrote "Philmont tends to oil every wheel that squeaks,...." That's
quite true, but it's too bad sometimes. In 2001, favorite 'targets' for
black powder shooting were the crew t-shirts. Those that were able to hit
it were quite proud of the bullet hole, and the shirt became a trophy of
sorts. One of our returning 2001 crew members brought his shirt back in
2003, specifically to add another 'trophy' hole. He was disappointed to
learn that you can now only shoot at targets that are already there, or at
something of 'no value'. Apparently last year a scout had an expensive hat
that he shot a hole into, and his mother became upset about his 'ruining'
the hat (not a trophy to her, I guess)and blamed Philmont for being
irresponsible in allowing him to shoot it. As a result, no more shooting at
hats, t-shirts etc. Our particular scout had his mother along on the trek,
and even with her permission he STILL couldn't shoot at his shirt. It's too
bad it got to that point.
