I have personally witnessed "high & mighty" staff members at camps harassing
every Crew Leader who brought forth the trash. No matter how well it had
been compacted, in the eyes of the staff member, nothing was good enough.
Such behavior is hazing, not harassment, it should be reported. Plain and
simple.
Similar to the posting a short while back about the unfavorable experience
at Urraca Mesa this summer, when we ran into the trash nazi, we also had
other unfavorable experiences at the camp, and the whole staff attitude was
lazy and that we were imposing on them by being there. Our crew leader, who
was generally a very even_keeled young man was totally upset and felt
humiliated after dealing with that camp. Thankfully, the rest of the trek
was great. That is the kind of behavior that should be reported in the
final evaluations that are left at Philmont. Those situations have been far
outnumbered by the helpful staff members we've come across, but those sour
apples leave an impression.
I find it sad that the whole method of trash compaction has now been thrown
out the window because of the actions of some overboard staff members, but
reporting hazing in the evaluation upon to return to CHQ is not sniffling or
whining. It is a serious situation that needs attention given to the
offending staff.
