I recall a kid on our trek in '96 whose father had insisted he wear the
official green and red BSA hat whereas most of us had opted for a favorite
wide brimmed model. When we did Black Powder he was so excited to be able to
shoot at the hat that his father had forced him to wear. Several shooters
took a turn and no one hit it. I stepped up and blew the top right out of it
on my first shot (wish I could hit ducks like that!). He was so happy he
gave me a big hug and proudly wore the hat for the remainder of the trek.
My only experience with staff that had an attitude about trash was at one
camp where they insisted on playing baseball with the compacted trash. If
your trash ball broke open you were told to take it elsewhere. We used about
3 ft of duct tape to secure ours and had no problem with our test.
Hazing can come in many forms. I recall once stopping at the PJ commissary
and our scouts asked if they could check out the swap box contents. They
were told they would have to stand on their heads and sing a song provided
by the staff. I wasn't so much worried that my crew was being hazed although
in the big picture, I think that anytime someone is asked to do something
demeaning against their will it is a form of hazing. I was more concerned
with the safety aspect of it and after taking a staff member aside and
mentioning that it would be a real shame if anyone ended up in the infirmary
because of a fall he quit doing it.
