I'm no biologist so I can't tell you if scientifically the truthfulness of
no #1 with the #2. I was always told to teach my crews this though and
accepted it as truth because my supervisors always told me to teach it.

A more important reason for no #1 in the latrines (for guys) is getting
salt on the latrine from the urine. Standing up, you are not gauranteed
propper aim and may splatter some on the edge of the seat. A wild animal
may then go to town on the seat of the latrine leaving splinters for the
next users. Sitting down, urine may go forward and have salt collect on the
front part of the seat (the vettical wall that holds up the seat). I've
seen quite a few latrines in my day where this was the case. Some animal
had dug a hole in the front wall of the latrine getting at the salt.

So what it does to the break down of the #2 I don't know exactly, but I do
know that it can affect the logevity of the latrine.
