We did ours at Beaubien -- We left Lost Cabin early in the morning so we
could get there in time to set up camp, have lunch and get to the cons site
by 2:00. It involved restoring part of a horse trail. Scouts got to make
big rocks into small rocks (read smash them with huge mauls, but hot,
heavy, hard work that wore out even the tough guys after a half hour) cut
down trees, take off branches and bark, haul rocks and gravel in
wheelbarrows -- they enjoyed it and traded jobs as they got tired. It was
quite a walk to the site - maybe 20 - 30 minutes? We saw the Buck Canyon
cons site on our way to Beaubien, and had we arranged it earlier, probably
could have done it there and hiked into Beaubien afterward, but there was
no way we were going to backtrack there after checking in at Beaubien. As
Beaubien was our layover day, we waited until the next day for a side hike
to Trail Peak. The chuckwagon dinner was that night too, so it worked out
well. A note on the chuckwagon dinner -- whoever is scheduled to cook for
your crew that day has to report to the chuchwagon cook two hours early to
help prepare the dinner. Also, whoever is scheduled to clean-up for your
crew that day has to stay after the dinner and help with clean-up. It
didn't take long and our boys rather enjoyed it. Our cooks opted to skip
the side hike to Trail peak (both had been there in 2001) and spent the day
helping the blacksmith season the Dutch ovens, and help the cook get things
ready early. Because of this, both of these scouts picked up applications
to be on staff at Philmont next summer, and are especially interested in
Beaubien. I hope it works out!
