Before this gets too totally weird, I'm renaming this thread!
I'll tell a short bear story, too. It's actually my Uncle Jack's
depression era story.
He was driving around in California, looking for work and couldn't find
any. He decided to go sleep out under the stars, partly because he
liked it and partly because he couldn't afford two bits for a room.
He went as far as he could possibly push his old car, enjoyed the view,
had a bite to eat, and then put his bed roll down on the ground close to
his car. He slept well until about dawn, when something wet fell on his
face.
He opened his eyes to find a bear sniffing him, with both paws on his
shoulders. He was paralyzed, but really really afraid that the bear was
going to follow that lick by a little nip. He said the only thing he
could think of.
"Boo."
The bear scrambled away from him and stopped, so Jack said, "BOO!" The
bear turned and ran, but Jack and bed roll were in the car with it
cranked before Mr. Bear had made a full turn.
When he go to town and had washed the bear slobber off, he found that
the bear had actually been quite polite. He had eaten all the crackers
and bread that were in the car, and left all the wrappings in the front
seat near the open window. He licked all the jelly out of the jar and
it was as clean as it could be and sitting upright on the floorboard.
