[Philmont]: breathing

i agree with jason. without reading any articles (that i can remember), it has always been my understanding that before the exertion is required, the blood should be as fully oxygenated as possible. in other words, start your deep breathing well before the demands of the activity force you to start gasping for air. it is my understanding, however, that breathing in through the nose and out the mouth was more effective. in colder weather, this warms the air before it hits your lungs (not to mention the drying effect of cool, dry air on your throat). i have suggested to the adults - those struggling uphill - that they essentially deep breath most of the time, rather than allowing the demands of exertion to dictate when they deep breath (gasp for air, at that point). the ab factor seems reasonable.

i find that taking "baby steps" (heal beside toe) when uphill going gets rough is very effective for adults who are having a rough go.
