My lovely bride of 26 years got me a Magellan SportTrak Map GPS unit as
a gift. I have not used it at Philmont yet, but I have used it for
several hikes in other places and I like it. It was easy to learn to
use, is lightweight, battery life (two AA cells) is about 10-12 hours,
and it has sufficient memory for a trip like Philmont. It comes with
topo map software and a cable for connection to your computer that
allows you to plan routes and upload them to the GPS along with the map
details, and to download "tracked" routes and waypoints from the GPS to
the computer. It's supposed to be waterproof and float too, but I've not
been brave enough to test that feature.

A GPS unit makes a nice supplement to map and compass if you practice
and are familiar with all of it's features before you go.
