Ditto!!! I would hope they make round robin a entire day event - it was the
best! Really learned a lot from fellow Scouters at Show and Tell. It would
have been more fun for me with family along! Thanks for the insight, and it
was great meeting you and Auggie, and family! You were nice, and so was
every one I met there - especially the staff! YiS: Jerry Bailey

Subject: [Philmont]: A Week at the Training Center
I got back earlier today from attending the second Cub Scout week at the
Training Center. This was my fourth trip their since 1999. Traveling with
me were my son 9his fourth trip too) and my wife (her first trip).
We left Dallas on Saturday, July 18 and traveled to Amarillo. From I-40 I
could see Amarillo Venturing Crew 9's Kwahadi Dancers' Kiva under
construction. We spent the night in Amarillo, for what I imagine that my
wife was thinking was her last night in civilized lodgings.
On Sunday morning we got what was a late start. We got to the training
center around 4:00 P.M. just as the welcome wagon crew was shutting down.
Got our tent assignment and checked in. I had some trouble assembling one
of the new-fangled cots with "U" shaped legs for my son. Luckily we were on
the second shift for meals and were able to get settled in just in time for
dinner. Sunday night the weather was threatening, so the opening ceremony
was held in the assembly hall with dining hall 1 serving as a balcony. The
rain never amounted to much more than one of the PTC's 6 inch rains-the
drops are about 6 inches apart.
After that we settled down for bed. We awoke Monday for the start of our
activities at Philmont-my son going to the deputy program, and taking 2
half day hikes and one full day hike--a paradigm shift on his part from
1999 when we hiked the Urraca trail and he said (at age 5) that he would
never hike again. My wife had a long morning session with the Silverado
program, finally deciding to do tours of Cimarron and Raton. When I asked
he about the COPE course, she said (and this is on Monday from a person who
avoided 3 prior trips to Philmont) that she'd do it next year if I get an
invitation.
The food was generally good, though I feel the portion control was way too
stringent. There was no iridescent mystery meat like in college, but like
college there was an over-emphasis on poultry-three meals had either
chicken or turkey. Breakfasts were the worst meal of the day, seemingly an
exercise in carbo loading (and the grits were way under cooked).
My classes were good, although there was something of an over emphasis on
matters that should have been covered in Fast Start, New Leader Essentials
and Basic--too much emphasis on things like selecting leaders, G2SS, etc on
Monday and Tuesday. After our day off on Wednesday, my conference,
Supercharging Den and Pack Activities began to fulfill its mission. I do
feel that there was too little time allowed for the round robin on Tuesday
morning and I also feel that the "Show and Tell" on Friday morning was
worth the price of the course.
My biggest negative is that the Philmont shops don't take American Express.
Yours in Scouting,
Hank Voegtle--Eagle Scout-Class of '68
