Our ranger in 2002 never mentioned a requirement that we use trails over roads or vice versa. We did run into several cases where we had to use the road instead of the trail due to fire damage but that's a different issue.
Trails are almost always more pleasant than roads - more trees, more shade, less dust, better ambiance. As an adult, I'm going to pick the trail every time. Since our guys were navigating, they chose the shorter road over the nicer trail every time. I think any boy-led crew will do the same thing. The guys want short over nice.
