Hey Matt,
Try to always stay on either hiking trails or if necessary pack trails. 4WD
roads and "unimproved" roads are hell to hike on. They are very compacted hard
soil or rock and offer little to now shade from the sun. In addition, philmont
trails are cut to be less than a 12% grade on average and roads do not have
those requirements attatched. You and your crew will be much happier hiking the
extra miles on trails instead of taking the roads. Good Luck at philmont
