The advice/request from the Philmont management is to take the trail (I think this came up at the advisors meeting - or some other meeting). They would like to avoid interactions where possible between hikers and vehicles (safety). Also, my limited experience was that the 4WD roads can be rockier and steeper than your average trail (I'm sure there are many exceptions). But shorter might not mean quicker.
