>When the route to a given place could be done on a hiking trail, or
might be shorter if partially done on one of the improved roads, does
Philmont require that we take the hiking trail, or is there a general
convention as to which one to take?
The general convention is to follow your crew youths' choices. As a
lead advisor I made it a point to not pipe in on the choices unless
asked - and made it a point to tell the other adults to keep out of it,
too. (which required some discipline from time to time) :-))
Our crew this year chose trails over roads every time except for one -
which had great views of the tooth and avoided back-tracking over a
trail we used the day before. My crew hates backtracking and wanted to
see as much of the ranch as possible.
There were several signs at trail/road intersections that stated that
use of roads was unsafe. From past experiences (having to dive onto the
shoulder when you heard the high pitched whine of a speeding vehicle
around the turn of a road we were using), I think that's pretty good advice.
