In 2002, our Ranger strongly recommended, but did not require, that we avoid
the 4WD and unimproved roads as they were generally much more difficult to
hike (grade and surface are not as conducive to hiking.) Our trek had one
or two place where we had to take a 4WD for a short (maybe up to a mile)
distance. He was right - besides the lack of enjoyment, the hiking was more
difficult. I would say there is a "general convention" to avoid the 4wd's.
Without a map, I don't recall the layout of the trails from Beaubien to
Trail Peak, but I do recall that there was a relatively new trail that we
started on, convinced ourselves we were on the wrong trail, turned around,
took an "old" trail that was almost straight up the side of the mountain,
reached the peak after much huffing and puffing, came back down the new
trail, and let out loud groans when we reached our "turn around" point. The
new trail is much easier.

Subject: [Philmont]: Trail choices when options are available in a given
trek?
Our crew is taking Trek 12 in about 3 weeks. I have a
question about trail preferences. The Philmont
sectional maps show hiking trails and what I would
interpret as unimproved dirt/gravel or possibly 4WD
roads. When the route to a given place could be done
on a hiking trail, or might be shorter if partially
done on one of the improved roads, does Philmont
require that we take the hiking trail, or is there a
general convention as to which one to take? I imagine
the hiking trail would be more pristine, but I'm just
curious.
I see this situation on the side hike to Trail Peak
from Beaubien. According to the map, there's a trail
on the west side of Bonito Creek going southeast out
of Beaubien, but there's also an unimproved road that
runs along Bonito Creek. I'm not sure if one can
really even get to the unimproved road without
"trailcutting," which we would not do, but if we can
get to the road it appears to be more of a direct
route to the cutoff up to Trail Peak to the east.
Your thoughts would be appreciated. Congratulations to
all the returned crews!
