Re: [Philmont]: Trail choices when options are available in a given trek?

Not all the "roads" you see on the map are maintained. Some may have
blowdowns across them. If they do, that will make for some rough hiking. Other
roads are in regular use and there are potential traffic hazards. Others are
there and available. As others have already said, roads may be much harder
underfoot than trails.

In 2003, when our crew resupplied at Ute Gulch while enroute from Cyphers
Mine to Webster Park (via Cimarroncito & climbing) we hiked the trail from
Cimarroncito all the way to Ute Gulch and took the road part way back fully laden.
It looked "shorter" on the map to the scouts. Road was hot, dusty and hard
underfoot. It was also crowded compared to the trails. The hike up Grouse(?)
Canyon was a wonderful change of pace back in the trees and rocks with a hint
of a stream once in a while.

Most sections where we were forced on to roads were simply a trudge and
generally hot because there was no shade.
