RE: [Philmont]: cold weather gear

I just got back from Trek 26 on 7/2. We used our fleece *every* day,
sometimes with our raingear as an additional layer. It's really, really hard
to pack to cold weather when surrounded by warmth. Suggest to your crew that
they can leave their fleece in your Basecamp locker if they decide they
don't need it but to take it at least that far.

We met a young lady from Florida who was part of a crew hiking up Phillips
in the rain and hail. She didn't bring any fleece and had sandals instead of
hiking boots. She was miserable and asking everyone and anyone if they had a
spare fleece jacket. Phillips had substantial snow when we crossed it and we
had hail on 4 days of our trek. When the rain/hail start, the temps seem to
drop 20 degrees or more, instantly.

Have a great trip and may Philmont Trail Magic come your way,
CR Thomas

I have several boys who don't seem to relate July with cold since they're
from the midwest. They are wanting to only take their raingear (Frogg toggs
for some) and a jacket. I suggested using the Philmont handbook as a
minimum guide, but they don't seem to be on the same page. Though they
could learn the hard way, I don't need the potential for other health
issues. any thoughts on the matter, particularly based on experience.
We're doing trek 5, which puts us inthe south and central region. Thanks in
advance for any input on this issued or info on trek 5.
