Re: [Philmont]: cold weather gear

I have been in 1992, 1996, and 2000 and will be back on 7/13. I went the
first time in 1992 expecting the heat of the desert, but was very surprised.
I have met some cold weather each time. I've never been without some hail.
In 1992, the weather turned very cold in the mid to late afternoon at Miners
Park, and we had to get the boys in their tents and sleeping bags for a few
hours until it warmed up again. In 2000, when we were descending Baldy at
about noon, it rained and turned cold. One boy, who was always made my life
interesting and very small for his age of 16, failed to carry a jacket. He
got cold and a little hypothermic. Fortunately the staff at French Henry
very kindly invited the group into the cabin to sit around the fire and
drink hot chocolate, but as a result we did not have the opportunity to
visit the gold mine. Hopefully, sharing these stories will help convince
your scouts.
