Re: [Philmont]: cold weather gear

The biggest danger as I see it is hypothermia.

Last year at one of the campsites, the usual afternoon thunder storm hit
just after we came off the trail. The temperature was probably in the
90's but dropped quickly. We put up our tarp and got out of the rain.
One of the boys got really cold and was shivering badly. We got him
into his polar fleece jacket and it helped. The next step would have
been a sleeping bag but with the small amount of room under the tarp and
the tents not set up it would have been difficult. This boy was
physically fit and had minimal body fat to keep him warm.

The boys can probably get by without the jackets but I wouldn't recomend
it. We had one boy on the trek who wears shorts when the temperature is
30 degrees fahrenheit. The jackets don't weigh much and take up minimal
room.

I suggested using the Philmont handbook as a minimum guide, but they don't seem to be on the same page. Though they could learn the hard way, I don't need the potential for other health issues. any thoughts on the matter, particularly based on experience. We're doing trek 5, which puts us inthe south and central region. Thanks in advance for any input on this issued or info on trek 5.
