Snip < I also remember one particularly nasty storm at Wild Horse in
2002.
Rain/lightning and then the hail. Got wet, then the temperature dropped
precipitously. Prompted a search mission when we hiked through Wild
Horse this trip. Never found it but I'm sure I froze my fanny off there
in 2002. :-)>
========================================================
Doug,
We were at Wild Horse on the evening of Friday 14Jun02, which is just
before your trek began. We saw some huge thunder-bumpers forming as we
hiked toward camp. We just had time to set up tents before a
rain/hailstorm hit us. Everyone except me dove into their tents. I
stayed out assisting some in their tents and messing about camp and
generally enjoying myself in the rain and small hail. It hailed about
2" worth. Afterwards everyone came out and had supper. I retired to my
tent quickly thereafter with the shakes (a mild case of hypothermia). I
warmed up and went to sleep well before dark. I slept great until about
midnight when a call of nature woke me.
As I prepared to exit the tent I heard a crunching sound coming up the
trail toward our camp. It was like someone walking on gravel except you
could tell it was something heavy of the quadruped variety. I heard a
rock being turned over. Then the bear was next to my tent. I could
hear him breathing. He thumped a large log nearby a time or two. The
bear found nothing interesting in our camp and then proceeded about his
business. Following Philmont bear protocol to the letter seemed mighty
worthwhile at that point in time.
We did not follow all the rules perfectly. I was so frightened that I
forgot to talk in a low voice to let the bear know I was there. An
advisor in the next tent was also awake and also frightened and forgot
to talk.
Larry.
