In 2002, I had to send 2 boys back to base camp when they got
hypothermia from Indian Springs. One was the crew chief. They had the
fleeces, and proper equipment, but it rained that evening, was cold in
the morning and difficult to warm up (their tent was very wet as well.
This was on day 5 - we were not able to get hem back with us after that.
Tell your kids base camp is pretty boring if you are not on the trail.
So whatever it takes to stay dry and warm. Any time a crew member
becomes sick, it hampers the whole crew because you must do everything
together. Our crew didn't leave Indian Springs until noon that day and
we had a long hike not only to the next camp, but from there to the food
pick-up.
