RE: [Philmont]: Leadership approval question

Thanks. The Vets have their space at a bowling alley but it's a bar, smoky,
and not a good environment for scout meeting!. The school we were meeting
at let us use the cafeteria but the layout was terrible for ceremonies,
there is no storage space and we were at the mercy of the school schedule
(too many Monday holidays and the troop couldn't meet). The other schools
in the area posed the same problem, and most of the churches that are
interested already have scout troops. The church we have found is an ideal
location and facility -- wooded property to camp on if we want to, nice
fellowship hall for meetings, a worship center and heritage chapel for
ceremonies, and conference rooms for break-out sessions or SM conferences,
BORs etc. and best of all STORAGE SPACE! All I did was get the pastor's
e-mail and ASK and he was all for it! They had been approached in the past
about chartering a faltering Cub Scout pack but the pack didn't have any
leaders and the church didn't want to have to start recruiting leaders from
the membership when none of the members had sons in the pack, nor much
background in scouting. But they were all for supporting a Boy Scout Troop
with a full staff of leaders. I don't think they want the responsibility of
being the charter partner, but may be open to it down the road. As for the
Vets, they have are helping us buy a new trailer and we don't want to
discontinue that relationship -- they are being as helpful as they can be
under the circumstances. Thanks for your input!

Jill,

Before adding any more rules, did you explain that all BSA volunteers have
been given background checks?

My second thought is would the American Vets mind if you just switched
Charter Organizations and they became the "extra help"? That way the local
Church would be approving all volunteers through the usual BSA process.

Finally, doing it their way, see what kind of checking they would like to
have. If it's a howdy and a shake, I don't think it will get in the way too
much.

Subject: [Philmont]: Leadership approval question

Our troop is chartered through the local American Vets, but they do not
have a place for us to meet. In the past, we have met at a local elementary
school. While the school has been very gracious to allow us to meet there,
the cafeteria facility is less than ideal for meetings and our meeting
schedule is restricted by school holidays and vacations. Therefore, we have
been looking into alternatives. A local church is considering allowing us
to use their facility, and it is an ideal set-up. We have been able to
answer all of their questions so for, except one. The want to know if there
is a process to include them in the process of choosing future leaders.
They are asking this to protect both the church and the scout troop, which
I understand. I'm sure there must be other troops out there who are
chartered by one organization, but meet elsewhere. Does anyone on the list
have a leadership approval process in place? Does anyone foresee any
problems? Thanks!

Jill Sampson
