RE: [Philmont]: Sister Crews

Expanding a little on what others have said:

Sometime next March, your crew will send in a post card with their top
five itinerary selections. Crews across the country will do the same
thing. If Philmont only put one crew on each itinerary, that would only
mean at best 35 crews per day. So in order to give more Scouts the
opportunity to attend, Philmont staff routinely assigns two crews to the
same itinerary on the same day. This is indicated by Itinerary 30 - "a"
and 30 - "b". These two crews are "sister crews" although they may or
may not be from the same Trek (618-B in your case). Occasionally there
may be a "c" if both "a" and "b" are at or near the 7 member minimum.

Short answer is - Yes, you will, but . . .

You don't have to hike or camp or do programs or anything else with your
sister crew, its just an expression used to describe the other crew.
Unless you go looking for them, you probably won't even know you have a
"sister crew" except you might begin to wonder about day 4 or 5 because
you keep seeing some of the same faces at programs, campfires, Advisors'
coffee (this is where "sister crews" frequently meet). Sometimes you
might find you also leap-frog your sister crew on the trail a lot too.

Some groups request to be "sister crews" so that they can share the same
experiences, do the same programs, etc. But many are like your group
and have two different abilities, personalities and objectives. Every
crew should "hike their own hike", but if you happen to meet your sister
crew along the way, it's a great way to meet some nice folks that have a
little in common for at least ten days.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
