RE: [Philmont]: cold weather gear

Here in Colorado I have a personal rule when going to the mountains or
even the foothills:
Step outside my house out here on the prairie in the morning, take a
good long look at the weather and then subtract 20 degrees, and add 5
inches of something wet. Then bring along the appropriate gear for those
conditions.
Someone already said though, you are the Advisor. Set the minimum
requirement of the gear that Philmont recommends and that is where
everyone starts. You are ultimately responsible for the health of each
boy in your care. You are also responsible for creating and maintaining
an environment where every one has the opportunity to have a great time.
Don't let anyone jeopardize that.
In 2002, a late July trek we were cold as... Well you know... up on Mt.
Phillips. That was in the middle of a beautiful day and only for 20
minutes to get pictures and have a packs off break. Remember, That was
without any inclement weather. This year we are overnighting at the
campsite up on Mt. Phillips. I'll be prepared for a cold night.

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: cold weather gear

I will certainly be urging my troops to be fully prepared, but I'm
anticipating some push back from a few who will say "all those
cold-weather stories are from folks who went to Philmont in June - we're
going the end of July (July 28), and it is hotter then - I can leave the
fleece at home".

What sayeth the wisdom of the list? Does the onset of the Philont
monsoon season in mid to late July offset the generally warmer
temperatures, such that the need for cold-weather gear is no less than
it was early in June?
