Re: [Philmont]: Water Filters

In regards to water purification, i had the opportunity to observe many crews
who each had their own idea of what water purification was. Philmont and your
ranger will only teach you about polar pure and will encourage you to use that
over any filters that you brought. In addition, they will require that your
crew carry polar pure. Polar pure, is ultimately safe and totally effective in
eliminating the water born pathogens of philmont water. True, it will not take
out particulate matter, but properly gathering the water should do well enough
in that department. During my tenure at philmont i had the privelage of seeing
more than a few crews tell me they had the greatest filter on the planet and
during my stay with them (Only 2 days on the trail) have their expensive beauty
break down in their hands. Or their filter was inadequate in filtering viruses,
giardia, etc. putting them at risk. In all fairness, the First Need filters
described are very good. While expensive, they filter everything including
viruses and do it very quickly for a filter. They would be my first choice
should i decide to give up my precious polar pure. Also, in regards to the
waiting time, assuming that each scout is packing the requisite 3 quarts of
water, with only minimal planning it is possible to always have potable water
available. The taste isn't bad either, my cynical staff tastebuds grew to miss
iodine water after i left the ranch.
