RE: [Philmont]: Camp Shoes

I bought $6 Wal-Mart house slippers for testing in 2002. I finally
decided to leave them behind and took my bulky, 1#14oz leather tennis
shoes. They worked fine and felt great after a long, day in the hiking
boots. I could use them for cooking in the evenings and walk all over
camp with out problems. They could have been a back up for boot
problems, used for climbing, etc.

In 2004 I took my Wal-Mart house slippers at 7oz. They were compact,
much lighter. We had a dry trek and they worked fine around camp. If
the ground had been wet and muddy I would have had to go back to my
boots. I could feel everything on the ground thru the thin rubber
soles. Shark broken parts of fallen sticks would often penetrate the
soles. As long as I stepped carefully they were OK. They were a success
on my 2004 trek, but had limitations. They were not suitable for
cooking since boiling water would go right thru them.

An idea might be to sew some tops on $2 Wal-Mart flip-flops. These have
thicker foam rubber soles. By adding a soft leather upper they could be
lighter, more compact, and as suitable for cooking as leather tennis
shoes.

Larry.
