In 2002 my fingers became cracked and painful by the 5th or 6th day
despite the application of hand lotion many times each day before the
??pm limit for applying a smellable to your body. They got so bad that
operating a zipper was very painful and hard to do. When I got home they
peeled for two weeks.
For our June 2004 trek and pre-PSR training, I bought some thin, leather
work gloves. They were soft and flexible and I could even work my
digital camera while wearing them. I still applied hand lotion several
times a day. I wore the gloves 80% of my waking hours. I had not worn
gloves so much since I loaded hay all day as a farm boy. They would take
me back every so often, especially at Rich Cabins in the barn with the
strong scent of alfalfa hay and animals. They worked great and I would
recommend them for all advisors with soft, office hands that mostly
shuffle paper and pound computer keyboards.
I branded mine at Clarks Fork with a cattle brand on one and the horse
brand on the other. They will become part of my PSR memorabilia. I
will carry leather gloves as part of my weekend camping gear as well as
my backpacking gear in the future.
Our other two advisors suffered cracked, painful fingers as I had in
2002. (Yes, I had shared my 2002 tales with them before we left.) Each
had a pair, but was not too keen to wear them.
Our youth mostly carried thin, polyester gloves or glove liners. I saw
them worn often on cold mornings, but not at any other time. Our kids
move like molasses on a cold morning. The youth did not seem to have the
problem with chapped, cracked fingers that we adults experienced.
