We just got back from Philmont. We did itinerary 21 (623-F1). We carried
two MSR water filters. We took two, for our 12 person crew, because of
concerns about how long it would take to pump enough water. However, we
never needed to use them. We only had to use Polar Pure one time.
Many camps have purified water. If you pay attention to water sources,
depending on your itinerary, you will only need to purify water a few
times. We only had one completely dry camp (Upper Bench). We had several
camps by streams, but carried enough drinking water and just used the
stream water for cooking.

This is similar to my experience on two prior treks. I will carry the pumps
on future treks, as a "safety net", just in case we need drinking water in
a hurry or if the creek water is so dirty we want to filter before or
instead of Polar Pure-ing.....
YMMV
Good luck on your trek!
