My first encounter with cold weather in 1992 was in August. The month
doesn't matter. The weather can turn cold at any time at Philmont.

weather gear

In 2002, we encountered a near-hypothermia case in my crew first day on
the trail July 29 after a rain/hail/thunderstorm at Lover's Leap
camp--about 6700 feet MSL. The young man lost his fleece on the train
enroute. He got wet, then cold, and another adult advisor loaned this
young man his fleece for the rest of the trek. We were cold and wet
another night at Clear Creek--I wore my fleece with my goretex
rainjacket that night in camp. Take the fleece--it does get cold there.

I will certainly be urging my troops to be fully prepared, but I'm
anticipating some push back from a few who will say "all those
cold-weather stories are from folks who went to Philmont in June - we're
going the end of July (July 28), and it is hotter then - I can leave the
fleece at home".

What sayeth the wisdom of the list? Does the onset of the Philont
monsoon season in mid to late July offset the generally warmer
temperatures, such that the need for cold-weather gear is no less than
it was early in June?
