RE: [Philmont]: cold weather gear

Mike Wald said "rainpants over zipoffs rather than long underwear."

That reminds me. I took two pairs of zipoffs to base camp. SInce the list
said one long and one short, I left the legs of one pair at base camp. Big
Mistake.

If you have two pairs of zipoffs, you can start with either pair in the
morning and adjust for the temperature throughout the day. If one pair is
just shorts, you would have to take the other pair off to put them on. This
never happens, except maybe during laundry.

SO take both pairs, with the legs, and you can alternate.

Also, speaking of laundry. We did laundry on day three. After that, it was
sunny in the morning while we hiked and rainy every afternoon. We carried
wet laundry for 5 days. The only clothes I had to wear were the ones I was
wearing when I did laundry.

I learned not to wash ALL of your clothes at the same time.

Thanks,
Scott Sibley

Some alternatives to think about:

rainpants over zipoffs rather than long underwear.  rain parka over fleece.

always carry a fleece and a small pillow case.  stuff your fleece into the pillowcase at night to form a pillow.   readily available in the morning.

rather than carrying a wool cap use a buff over your ball cap.  buff can also be worn as a muffler.

carry leather gloves rather than poly.  you can use them for conservation, warmth, and hot pads - two uses for every item.

wind is a bigger concern than low temperatures this time of year.
