Several phil-treks ago I had the same idea but there never
seemed to be enough time for such an activity. Philmont
management frowns on several aspects of this: running in/around camp, being on the trail in groups of less than 4,
non-crew activity, etc. If it's any consolation - you will get "high altitude training" from just doing a trek & being at that altitude for 2 weeks.

A war story - we had an adult advisor runner on last year's
contigent. He went trail running on one of his first several days out. He fell and broke both wrists. He splinted himself with duct tape & magazines and completed his trek. I guess runners are a tough breed....
