It's great that the staff was able to help solve the emergency, but the situation you experienced is exactly why we make sure our crew repair kits includes a hip belt buckle. It's pretty common for them to get stepped on and broken on the trail, even though we train our crew members to clip the buckle when the pack is off to keep ir off the ground.

My Kelty Pacific Crest pack also a duplicate buckle on the removable "day pack top" as well, a nice backup feature.

> When we got to base camp, my son's pack belt buckle had been broken in

> While visiting the post office, I noticed the pack rental office and stopped
> in. They had a sign listing fees for broken parts including belt buckles. So
> I asked if they could sell me one.
>
> After getting to the right person, they pulled up a box of spare parts.
> They didn't even have a male and female that matched. So we brought the
> broken one, but still no match. Then they called in the REAL right person,
> who decided that he could cannibalize one from a new hip belt set, and rent
> it to us for $3. My son was delighted because he had been stressed out about
> using a duct taped buckle, or the wrong size.
>
> While on the trail, my son decided to use the day pack portion of his pack.
> The day pack had an identical belt buckle.
>
> So three cheers to the Pack Rental staff for resolving our problem.
