Ideal AA Itinerary

I guess I'm getting old. My two Autumn Adventures were nice "short" relaxing hikes where we were in no hurry to go anywhere and had plenty of time to "stop and smell the roses". For me an AA is a chance to slow down and enjoy the Philmont that we miss when we are on our way to the next staff camp for program. In 2002 our AA had us at Cito for two nights with a hike to Hidden Valley and Window Rock. This is a hike I have taken many times, but we spent as long as we wanted at several scenics along the way because we were in no hurry "to get to Clark's for the Chuck Wagon". We went to Cypher's for two nights. We side hiked Mt Phillips and had plenty of time to explore the mining area around Cypher's. Our last night was at Clark's Fork just exploring around the camp. The AA covered maybe 25 - 30 miles max. It was a laid back relaxing trip. That is my idea of an AA. In 2003 we hiked from Maxwell turnaround to Miranda. For the next 5 days we side hiked all around the area returning to Miranda each day. We climbed Baldy twice (once from the front and once from the back). OK we're crazy. We went through Baldy Town, Copper Park, French Henry, Ewell's Park, Head of Dean, and Black Horse. (not on the same day) Those trails are much more fun with a day pack on your back. This too was a laid back relaxing trip. I will say that both trips were enhanced by an excellent Philmont staffer on each trip. Dave Kopsa in 2002 and Kyle Robinson in 2003. I think Kyle is serving this year as CD at Apache Springs.

My point is that my ideal AA intinerary is anywhere on the ranch where I'm not in a hurry to go anywhere. I'm trying to recruit another bunch of "old coots" for an AA in October.
