In the trip to Clark's to Black Mountain is a trial I have taken several times. It is a bit longer I agree but is is a nice canyon an scenic as far as I am concerned. From Clark's, head back toward the Hunting Lodge. Turn left and head up the canyon to Lambert's mine then up over Comanche Pass and drop down into Black Mountain. It is an easy trail. I hiked down that way in 2001 and I seem to remember a couple of nice scenics and canyon vistas. You will have water most of the way. This is just another alternative.

Trail names
Dr Bob talks about the trail up Shaffers Peak. Yes it went straight up to the peak from the pass. Nasty!! Ugh!! Some of you old timers will remember the trail up to Shaffers Pass from the North and the South. Both went straight up the washes. I climbed them both. Ugh!! The "wall" is the trail from French Henry to Copper Park. The nasty trail up Trail Peak went up from the Fowler Mesa side. I haven't been that way for years but I have done it with and without full pack. Ugh!! I'm not sure about the "stairmaster" but I thought it was the climb up Phillips from Clear Creek. Ah yes, the Stockade Trail from the Stockade to the Tooth. I went up and down that last September. Just as nasty as it always was. We side hiked it as a fitting end to our AA. The clearest weather I have ever seen on the ranch that day.
