We took a moderate view of the "on vacation" edict. We were not on the duty roster, but the adults would occasionally take a specific job (e.g. set up the dining fly, compact the trash) so the crew could work on more pressing issues (dinner). Sometimes, we would wake up early and start some water for coffee. About once a day, I would go to the crew leader and ask, "Is there anything I can do to help?" Other than that and helping out with some of the "motivation", we were truly "On Vacation", and we got good feedback from the boys that they appreciated the independence. It wasn't that different from regular troop outings, but the adults "made no decisions", which I think is the major point about it. We did get lost a few times, we did hit the trail kinda late, but we all had a great time.
