Susan:

Our crew hung out at Mona Lisa Pizza, 144 North 1st St (just north of
the station). It has a pretty good pizza, sandwich and Mexican menu
(sufficient for us Cheeseheads, anyway) with large servings. It also
has a game room in back, for folks who have gone into video withdrawal.

There is a movie theater in town a couple of blocks from the station,
but its not open every night. There is a grocery store about 5 blocks
north of the station. Get there early; last year, the only two stores
within walking distance closed at 8:00 p.m., and the convenience stores
don't carry much. Some munchies (and OJ and donuts) for the train might
be a good idea.

Most likely, there will be other crews waiting at the station along with
you. Our train was running about 6 hours late, and a large game of
ultimate Frisbee broke out in the open area next to the station, with
people drifting in and out of the game. There were also a lot of card
games going on; we taught a young man from the St. Louis area the fine
art of euchre.

My guess is you're riding the eastbound train (departure around 6:00
p.m.) but are arriving in Raton as early at noon (when the train heading
west rolls through). Do all you can at Phimont and in Cimarron before
getting on the bus to Raton. On our last day, we had time to check out,
tour the Villa Philmonte, catch the shuttle bus into Cimarron, and still
make the 3:00 p.m. bus to Raton, which would have given us plenty of
time to look around Raton even if the train had been on time.

Looking for any information on Raton. Our crews will be there for 6
hours waiting for the train. Are there any good restaurants?
Activities boys would enjoy? Need ideas that are within walking
distance.
