RE: [Philmont]: Campfire times and Double H Stuff

Interestingly enough, I was reading 'Beyond the Hills', the Waite Phillips
biography, while at PTC earlier in the summer, and it mentioned that
Phillips once owned a ranch called the 'Double H' somewhere in southwestern
NM -- maybe it's come back to us to access through this indirect means!

Double H is BSA's & Philmont's newest High Adventure Base, which was just an
idea last summer and reality this summer. It is approximately 100,000
acres?..(it's large!) that was donated by Bob Tortenson (sp?) upon his death
to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation with the stipulation that RMEF partner
with a youth organization to promote the land and outdoors for future
generations. Thus Philmont's involvement.

Starting in 2004, Double H is offering 7 day Wilderness Adventures in the
high desert outside of Datil, NM. This is in sight of the VLA (Very Large
Array - radio astronomy dishes seen in the movie "Contact").. no trails,
using GPS technology, in which crews are definitely challenged. Ryan King
is Base Camp Director at Double H and can be reached via Philmont, and he
and his staff have done a miraculous job at putting a top notch program
together (and ever improving) in such a short time.
