A crew right before we went out was stalked somewhere along the ridge
between John Henry Windmill and the Rincon Windmill on the west side of
the ranch. The lion roamed into the open long enough for the Guide to
see it and was able to keep track of it for a short time while the crew
worked their way on down the ridge to the flats.
We went across that ridge last Friday on the way down to Rincon, and
that was one of the best hikes I've ever been on, but I looked back once
and noticed our guide was really scanning the rocks and ridges around
us... after that I decided it would be nice to get off the ridge and
on to our destination. :-)
There are several lions, bears, and rattlesnakes throughout the vast
area, which we never saw either.. did see a lot of scat and such, saw
deer, antelope, jackrabbits, horned toads, numerous bird species, even
found an arrowhead (it's still right there on a hillside for someone
else to see between the High Lonesome Windmill and the Lower Medley
Well).. nonetheless, the general feeling was to keep a close watch,
observe proper bear and wilderness protocols, keep the crew closer
together on hikes, and not overly worry about it.
