Bill:
Just returned from 702Crew that did the North and Central Country. We very
rarely saw or encountered 'mossies' except at Copper Park and Red Hills.
Unless your son is particularly allergic to bites, I would not bother with
the repellent. Although I carried a 1 oz bottle of 100% deet repellent, it
was used only once, and that was at Red Hills. Save yourself the weight, by
not taking it along. By the time you have been on the trail a day or two,
your personal odor is repugnant to most all of the biting and stinging
creatures.

Any need to take mosquito repellant? My son leaves for a Rayado trek on
7/16.

Thanks

Just got back from Philmont (701). Our crew did trek 24, but added
several side hikes, making the total distance over 80 miles. GREAT
weather - only one incident of rain/hail that lasted only about 2 hours.
Several bear sightings. Two rattlesnake sightings. Only mosquitoes
worth mentioning were in Copper Park. Feel free to contact me offline
if you have any specific trek questions.
