To all
We were the sister crew to Dave's on Trek 24 701-Q1. What a great time had
by all. Saw several bears, one in Upper Dean Cow, another around Cathedral
Rock on our way to Clark's Fork, and another at Clarks Fork camp ground (I
chased that one from an adjacent camp site). The bear procedures work and
we never had one enter our camping area. Also saw lots of deer. At Upper
Dean Cow we had three of them walk with in 15 feet of the campsite while we
were packing for the trail! At Ute Springs I was within 10 ft of a buck and
stood there for 10 minutes while he grazed. Absolutely amazing!
The weather was beautiful, only one 2 hour rain storm after dinner at Ute
Springs. (Use camp site 7, 12 rock chairs and you can set up the dinner fly
over the chairs. Only time the fly was useful on our trek). Even though we
planned on using the Turkey Bag method, our ranger made us follow the
Philmont One Pot Method......I will never use Turkey bags again! The dinner
meals were outstanding and with a small rubber scrapper and fingers the pot
was easy to clean with hardly any yum yum to take. The scrub pad was
usually the only thing in the yum yum bag! Cheese Cake we made in each of
our cups by dividing the bag in two then add 800ml of water to each cup and
stir. Add topping and wait 8 minutes to harden. I never made it to the 8
minutes because it was sooooo good.
Bugs were only a problem at Copper Park. A small amount of repellent was
all that was needed.
Our ranger was Daniel Akins from Texas. He was OUTSTANDING! Very thorough
and demanded the crew follow the Philmont method. Even though the scouts at
first thought he was a stickler on the rules, by the end of the 2 day period
they were sorry to see him go and at the end of the trek they were singing
his praises with the wisdom he had passed on. You will be lucky to have
Daniel as your ranger!
I would like to thank everyone on this forum for there help and tips. We
were fully prepared for our adventure and the ranger could tell that we knew
what we were doing. I will write a full account later on the day to day or
our trek. To much other email to get thru right now

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Supper Cleanup in 2004
Before we went to Philmont this year, we were debating the Turkey Bags
method.
Now that I have been through Philmont, I don't really see the advantage of
Turkey Bags.
We cooked all of our meals in a single pot (exception - cheesecake was made
separately). Cooking it all together worked fine and assured that everyone
ate some green beans. We sumped the pot thoroughly - there never seemed to
be quite enough food to satisfy everyone, so this was not a big deal. With a
little water, the cook pot was very clean. We followed the procedures, but
there was never more than a few particles to go in our YumYum bag. We
carried the same YumYum bag the entire trek, because there was virtually
nothing in it, except scrubbies.
If we used Turkey Bags, they would not have been as easy to sump as the pot,
and then there would be bags to carry - clean ones and dirty ones.
CHEESECAKE - we were wondering what to do with this, and our Sister Crew
from South Florida told us that it fits in the lid of the large pot. That
worked great. We made this process even easier by mixing the cake in a
ziplock bag. Put the ingredients in, zip, and squish around until you can
feel that it is mixed consistently. Pour into pot lid, sprinkle with
topping, and enjoy thoroughly. We even pulled some extra cheesecake from the
swap box because we enjoyed it so much.
Thanks,
Scott Sibley
