Instead of relying on Philmont, plan to do 7 hours of conservation work
BEFORE you go to Philmont. Work it into your work-up plan. Performing
an hour or two of conservation work during each work-up (e.g., trail
maintenance, beach clean-up) definitely is feasible, as is scheduling a
Saturday morning project for 3 or 4 hours. We used this approach this
year, and it made getting the hours pretty stress-free.
Of note, a couple of my crewmembers still were a couple of hours short
when they arrived at Philmont due to missing one of our work-ups. We
had them (and an advisor) pick up the extra hours needed at one of the
Philmont conservation sites while the other crewmembers finished program
and set up camp (the staff was very accommodating about having these
scouts perform program first!).
Of course, the crew has to do at least 3 hours of conservation work at
Philmont to get the Arrowhead patch, so your target before getting to
Philmont is 7 hours.

I'm curious as to how crews complete the Conservation Project
requirement
for the 50 Miler. I am sorry to say I dropped the ball on my 2002 trek
and
not a single Scout earned the award. We finished 3 hours of Cons near
PJ,
but once our council pickup crew got home we blew to the four winds
and
didn't follow up. I don't want this to happen again in 2005. Do
crews
regularly pick up hours at the staffed camps? How 'bout a little
friendly
advice from the list : )
