I am not aware of / have not seen crews "picking up" these extra 7 hours of
conservation time, while at Philmont - although that does not mean that it
is not possible or does not happen.....

From my experience, the accepted practice is to do these hours at "home".
I believe that this is what all of the literature advises too. I have seen
it advised that this can be a good crew building activity, before the trek.

It has been my experience that it is a great team-building activity. It has
also been my experience that it is better to do it before the trek, as it
is harder to make it a priority after you get home (just like it is hard
for us to continue our exercise regimen after the big motivation is gone...).

I would advise against spending precious moments, at Philmont, doing extra
hours for the 50 Miler award. Although, I can see how doing extra hours of
work to make the ranch a better place could also be very satisfying....

BTW - Our crews did not get their hours done ahead of time, this year. I
have not heard any discussion among the Scouts, regarding this. It is a
shame, as the new 50 Miler patch is pretty cool looking!
I will have to remind them and see if I they can get motivated....

Good luck with your preparations!
