We also dropped the ball in 2002 by not completing our conservation hours. This year, we decided to all do the hours ahead of time. We chose to leave for Philmont a day early and stay in Raton and do a day's work at Sugarite Canyon State Park. Since we came from the flatland of Texas, we also used the day for altitude acclimation. The Rangers at Sugarite were delighted to have our help in rebuilding some of their trails and even offered to let us stay there for free in the future. It worked out great for our crew and we all earned the 50-miler together.
