Re: [Philmont]: Unscheduled Crews Camping at Shaefers Pass

In 2002, a fire was started by lightning just above Clark's Fork. My
son was part of an Order of the Arrow Trail Crew, camping at Schaefer's. A
staffer ran into the camp, ordered them to only take water bottles with them,
and top double time march away from the fire. They returned the next day, after
the fire was put out, to recover their gear, and continue on their trek. The
staff did an unbelievable job of clearing the crews out of the danger area,
under adverse conditions. However, there was one crew that was not in the
campsite they were scheduled for. This created a huge safety issue for both the
crew, the backcountry staff, and eventually SAR teams. The crew went
unaccounted for several hours. The staff was not very pleasant when they found them
later.

Bottom line, stay where you are supposed to....
